About the Coffee
This washed coffee comes from the renowned Baragwi Farmers Cooperative Society in Kirinyaga — one of Kenya’s most respected coffee-growing regions, nestled on the slopes of Mount Kenya.
Founded in 1953, Baragwi FCS is now the largest cooperative in the country, uniting nearly 17,000 smallholder farmers across 12 wet mills. The cooperative plays a crucial role in supporting its members — from processing and quality control to ensuring access to market and fair pricing.
Coffee here is grown at high altitudes, where cool temperatures and fertile volcanic soils create ideal conditions for slow cherry maturation and dense, complex beans.
Cherries are carefully hand-sorted before processing, then pulped and separated by density. The highest-grade beans undergo fermentation for 18–24 hours under shade, followed by thorough washing and an extended soaking stage in fresh water. Drying takes place over 12–20 days on raised African beds, allowing for a slow, controlled process that enhances clarity, brightness and structure in the cup.
