About the Coffee

Gakuyu-ini is an expressive Kenyan coffee from the lush hills of Kirinyaga, where smallholder farmers cultivate exceptional coffees known for their vibrant acidity, juicy fruit character and remarkable clarity.

This AB lot comes from the Gakuyu-ini washing station, operated by the Thirikwa Farmers’ Co-operative Society. Around 1,200 farmers contribute freshly harvested cherries, carefully selected and processed to bring out the distinctive character of this celebrated growing region.

Alongside coffee, local farmers grow bananas, mangoes, avocados and other crops, creating diverse agricultural landscapes that support their communities.

The coffee is made up of SL28, SL34 and Batian varieties, bringing together the bright, complex fruit character and structured sweetness that make Kenyan coffees so distinctive.

Processing

Freshly harvested cherries are carefully hand-sorted to remove underripe and overripe fruit before being floated and depulped.

The coffee then undergoes 18–24 hours of dry fermentation, followed by several washing stages using clean water from the nearby Kiri River. Once the remaining fruit mucilage has been removed, the beans are soaked in fresh water for another 24 hours.

Finally, the coffee is slowly dried on raised beds for 12–20 days, depending on weather conditions. This traditional Kenyan washed process helps develop exceptional clarity, vibrant acidity and a beautifully defined fruit character.

In the Cup

Juicy raspberry leads the way, followed by the vibrant sweetness of ripe coffee cherry and the delicate, stone-fruit character of nectarine.

Bright, lively acidity brings freshness and energy to the cup, while a clean, lingering finish allows the layered fruit notes to shine.

Juicy, vibrant and full of character

A beautifully expressive Kenyan coffee where intense berry notes meet ripe stone-fruit sweetness and sparkling acidity. Bold yet elegant, with remarkable clarity and a juicy finish that keeps you coming back for another sip.

Take your time. Let it unfold.
