About the Coffee
This coffee comes from Aime Gahizi and his family farm near Gitesi washing station in Rwanda’s Western Province. Alongside processing cherries from neighbouring smallholder farmers, the Gahizi family carefully cultivates their own coffee plots, where this lot was produced.
Coffee here is grown with a strong focus on biodiversity and long-term sustainability. Organic fertiliser made from worm compost and cattle manure helps nourish the trees naturally while supporting soil health and limiting leaf rust. Over 20,000 coffee trees now grow on the family’s land, surrounded by the steep green hills that define this part of Rwanda.
At Gitesi, every stage of processing is approached with extraordinary care. Cherries are floated, eco-pulped and dry fermented before being fully washed and soaked. Drying takes place slowly on raised beds to preserve clarity, sweetness and structure in the cup.
The washing station is also known for its advanced natural water filtration system, designed to return clean, oxygenated water back into the local environment after processing. Sustainability and community are deeply connected here — from seedling donations and farming workshops to social initiatives supporting neighbouring families.
For Aime, coffee is about far more than production alone. It is also about rebuilding, reconciliation and creating long-term opportunities within the local community.
